London-based prodco Windfall Films has been commissioned by UK network Channel 5 for a series that explores the mysterious world of owls.

The Secret Life of Owls is a two-part series that uses natural history footage to provide an intimate look of owls’ lives inside their nests.

Using hidden cameras, the series tracks several pairs of owls in a wild area of rural Essex. It follows the birds as they mate, raise their young and battle predators. The Secret Life of Owls also shows chicks’ journeys from birth, as they transform from innocent bundles of fluff into graceful killers.

“We have a real fascination with owls and these two programs take us into their incredible world in a wonderfully intimate way,” said Lucy Willis, C5 commissioning editor, in a statement.

The 2 x 60-minute series is directed and series produced by Tom Cook. Charlotte Hunt-Grubbe is producer and David Dugan is executive producer.

The Secret Lives of Owls will be broadcast on Channel 5 and its recently announced  premium content channel 5Prime in 2018.
