Discovery Communications has cemented Rebecca Kent as the permanent GM for operations across Australia and New Zealand after filling in for nine months on an interim basis.
In the role, Kent will continue to grow Discovery’s existing business, which consists of eight channels in Australia and six in New Zealand. She reports into James Gibbons, executive VP and GM for UK, Australia and New Zealand, and head of commercial development for EMEA.
Discovery’s channels business in the territories currently consists of Discovery Channel, Discovery Turbo, TLC, Animal Planet, Discovery Science, Discovery Kids, Eurosport, Eurosport News, Living Channel and Food TV.
Previously, Kent served as VP of business transformation and people in Singapore where she was responsible for growing Discovery’s business across Asia. The exec also spent three years working in Discovery’s London offices where she managed several operational projects, including a review of Discovery’s Olympic broadcast plans and a review of Discovery’s India broadcast operations.
She also held roles at BBC Worldwide and worked as a management consultant at global management consulting firm McKinsey & Company in Australia.
The factual media giant had recently restructured its Australian and New Zealand divisions under one roof, with Gibbons in charge of bolstering the two South Pacific regions.
“I am delighted that Rebecca has agreed to run our Australia and New Zealand business. She has a diverse background, has worked across many different initiatives and markets and has a really strong understanding of the media environment in these important territories which will be instrumental as we work on developing the existing business,” said Gibbons in a statement.
