History UK has commissioned Parisian producer Pernel Media to produce an English-language version of its docu-drama The Real War of Thrones: A History of Europe.
Directed by Vanessa Pontet and presented by historian Dan Jones, the 4 x 60-minute series charts the history of medieval and early modern Europe, as well as the conflict of The Hundred Years’ War, through dramatic reconstruction.
Originally commissioned for France 5 Television, the series chronicles the conflicts between the French Royal Houses of Valois and Burgundy, and the House of Plantagenet in England, which launched a series of conflicts waged over the succession of the French throne from 1337 to 1453, known as The Hundred Years War.
Each hour-long episode focuses on one moment in European history and a clash between European houses, damaged France so much that it enabled England to briefly rule the country.
Documentary-driven SVOD platform CuriosityStream has also recently acquired the global non-exclusive rights to stream an international version of the series.
France Television Distribution handles worldwide distribution, excluding the UK, for The Real War of Thrones: A History of Europe.
“We’re delighted to have Dan Jones on HISTORY, telling with his usual wit and authority, the remarkable story of the dynastic struggles which shaped modern Europe,” said Korn in a statement. “It’s also a pleasure to be collaborating with Pernel Media, who did such an accomplished job in viscerally capturing the brutality of life in fourteenth century Europe.”
Editors Note: A previous version of this story had listed Chris Holt as the director of The Real War of Thrones: A History of Europe. He wrote the original scripts, which were translated into French. Vanessa Pontet is director.
