International production and distribution company Banijay Group has bolstered its presence in the German marketplace with the launch of a Cologne-based production studio.
Banijay Productions Germany will be helmed by Arno Schneppenheim (pictured), former founder of Endemol Shine-owned German production company Florida TV.
Schneppenheim joined Endemol Shine in 2009 as head of unit comedy and light entertainment, and became MD of Florida TV in 2012, a joint venture between Joko Winterscheidt, Klaas Heufer-Umlauf and Endemol Shine.
News of the newly minted prodco follows Banijay’s increased investment in Cologne-based shop Brainpool, becoming the leading stakeholder in the company.
Financials in the deal were not disclosed. Banijay previously acquired a 50% stake in Brainpool in 2009.
The augmented stake will come through the acquisition of the shares held by Brainpool’s Stefan Raab, who will once again become the main shareholder of his prodco Raab TV. Under the deal, Raab TV will remain under the Brainpool umbrella in the long term.
One of Germany’s leading production houses, Brainpool is responsible for such series as TV Total, Ladykracher, Beat Your Host, Pastewska, Celebrity School, Next Big Thing, and Stars in Danger: The High Dive.
“Germany is one of the largest and diverse broadcast markets in the world with a strong growth in pay and OTT services,” said Banijay Group CEO Marco Bassetti in a statement. “At Banijay Group we intend to capitalize on the many opportunities this flourishing territory can offer and are delighted to welcome Arno Schneppenheim to lead Banijay Productions Germany.”
Added Schneppenheim: “We aim to build Banijay Productions Germany into one of the most innovative production companies for TV, video-on-demand and live entertainment, offering new, fresh, daytime, access and primetime formats as well as branded content and social media productions.”
