UK-based documentary sales agent Dogwoof has acquired the worldwide rights to Alba Sotorra’s feature-length documentary Commander Arian ahead of its world premiere at Hot Docs ’18.

Commander Arian follows the story of the YPJ, an all-female military organization, and its commander Arian as they head into the heart of the Syrian War, breaking through the Siege of Kobane to liberate their lands from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

The film also documents Arian as she is forced to deal with the visible and hidden wounds of war in her fight for women’s freedom.

Stefano Strocchi is producer on the film, which was produced by Alba Sotorra SL in association with Berlin-based Boekamp & Kriegsheim.

Commander Arian was made with the support of the European Union – Creative Europe, Media Program. In Spain, the film has the support of ICEC, ICAA, Catalan Films, Institut Ramon Llull, Magical, Antaviana, Movistar+, TVE and TVC.

In Germany, the film was supported by the Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg, with a co-investment from Post Republic.

The deal was negotiated by the filmmakers. The 2018 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival runs April 26 to May 6 in Toronto.
