The upcoming edition of the Sheffield Doc/Fest will have 65 doc-making teams from over 20 countries pitching their projects during its annual MeetMarket component, while 25 project teams will pitch their latest efforts during the Alternate Realities market.
Both markets take place over June 11 and 12 at Cutler’s Hall in Sheffield. For the first time, teams pitching in the MeetMarket will be invited to take meetings with the teams pitching digital, interactive and immersive work in the Alternate Realities market.
Teams pitching during the MeetMarket are comprised of established filmmakers — including John Battsek, Kevin Macdonald, Mike Lerner, Christian Beetz, John Dower and Tilda Swinton among others — and emerging talents such as Mitch Dickman (Being Evel) and Elizabeth Lo (Hotel 22).
Projects being pitched to international commissioners and decision-makers include Represent from Kartemquin Films, which follows two women who are each running for office for the first time; true crime project The Sherwood Case, exec produced by John Battsek and directed by Isabel Tang; the John-Dower-directed Mystery of DB Cooper, examining the story of a remarkable plane hijacking and escape; and Christian Beetz’s Brazil – The Rise and Fall of Lula Da Silva.
Elsewhere, Academy Award-winning director Kevin Macdonald and Docsville’s Nick Fraser will present I Am Spartakiades, which focuses on the mass gymnastic events held in communist Czechoslovakia, and actor and filmmaker Tilda Swinton helms On Drumduan Hill, a collaboration with The Derek Jarman Lab and producer Colin McCabe.
The Alternate Realities market will feature 25 VR and interactive/immersive projects, including: Invisible Heroes from Brazilian director Ricardo Laganaro; A Video Ghost from Jason Drakeford, which chronicles influential husband and wife artist team Shigeko Kubota and Nam June Paik; and Jayisha Patel’s After the Fire, which tells the story of a young girl and her mother, both survivors of 2017′s Grenfell Tower fire.
The Sheffield Doc/Fest takes place in Sheffield, England, from June 7-12.
