UK pubcaster BBC2 has ordered ITN Productions, the in-house production business of ITN, to produce the two-part travelogue Frankie Goes to Russia.

The 2 x 60-minute docuseries will follow provocative comedian Frankie Boyle experiencing Mother Russia in the run up to the 2018 FIFA World Cup to go behind the stereotypes and half-truths of Russian football and culture.

Boyle will visit several of the host cities, discover the Soviet drunk tanks meant for unruly fans, join a World Cup volunteer induction course, meet Russia’s most dedicated football fans, and more.

BBC2 will air the specials ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in June.

ITN Productions’ Bernie Kay serves as executive producer, with Jenny Dames listed as director and producer.

The programs were commissioned for the BBC by Clare Sillery, head of documentaries, and commissioning editors Emma Loach and Jamie Balment.

“Sending a provocateur like Frankie to Russia was a bold move by ITN Productions and shows how we are always looking to diversify and approach nonfiction programming in new ways,” said ITN’s Kay, in a statement. “Frankie has been an incredible voice for the programs bringing his inimitable humor and insight to challenge assumptions associated with Russia and football.”
