Tang Media Partners-owned prodco Global Road Entertainment has partnered with Canadian pubcaster CBC to co-develop the original studio-based entertainment format Fridge Wars.
The unscripted competition format will pit two celebrity chefs in head-to-head battles to make the best meal possible from ingredients found within the refrigerators of Canadian families from across the country.
A premiere date for Fridge Wars has not yet been set.
“We are thrilled to develop this new original format with our friends and partners at the CBC,” said Phil Gurin (pictured), president of unscripted & alternative television, in a statement. “Our shared vision to create original content, to be produced and launched in Canada with Canadian producers and talent, is a perfect way to combine creative and production resources with our friends to the north.”
“We look forward to working with Phil and the team at Global Road to develop this fresh, family-friendly format with strong Canadian and international appeal,” added Jennifer Dettman, executive director of unscripted content at CBC. “CBC is committed to creating original unscripted formats that are exportable, and also serve our audiences here at home.”
The CBC has a pre-existing relationship with Global Road Entertainment’s Gurin. The two entities had previously collaborated in 2014 – via The Gurin Company – to develop original Canadian formats for global distribution.
The partnership follows a wave of recent news from Global Road Entertainment’s television division, which has previously inked co-development agreements with producers Reginald Hudlin and Byron Phillips under the pair’s New Nation Networks banner; French powerhouse Newen; and Ukrainian media group FILM.UA Group.
The company has also recently secured copro and development deals with format-focused prodco Spark Media, fact-ent studio Double Yellow TV and Denise Harrop’s 3 Magic Monkeys.
