Discovery, Inc. has appointed former CNN Worldwide exec Alex Wellen as president and general manager of its automotive media company, Motor Trend Group.
Effective on July 1, Wellen will be tasked with overseeing all aspects of the group’s strategic direction and growth, including the Motor Trend Network.
The Discovery-owned cable network Velocity will be rebranded in the fall, as Motor Trend Network.
Motor Trend’s digital growth has been fueled by Velocity’s Fast N’ Loud and Misfit Garage, as well as hit shows Roadkill, Hot Rod Garage and Wheeler Dealers.
Bob Scanlon, president and general manager of Motor Trend Network and Automotive Content for Motor Trend Group, will report to Wellen.
Wellen joins Discovery after 12 years with CNN Worldwide where he was most recently the global chief product officer responsible for setting the vision for CNN’s mobile, web, data, video, OTT and connected platforms. He’s also served as senior executive producer for CNN Worldwide, and before working in media was a high-tech intellectual property litigator.
“If you’re in the business of creating fan-based brands, I cannot think of a more personal category than automotive, a more iconic global brand than Motor Trend, or a more gifted team than the talent I’ve met at Discovery and Motor Trend Group,” said Wellen in a statement.
