Melissa Haizlip and Sam Pollard’s Mr. Soul! took home the Audience Award for best feature at the 16th edition of AFI Docs, as the five-day festival in Washington, DC, and Silver Spring, MD wrapped up on Tuesday (June 19).

Mr. Soul! (90 minutes) (pictured) takes an in-depth look at the late 1960s WNET public television variety entertainment series Soul! and its producer Ellis Haizlip.

According to a release, “The series was among the first to provide expanded images of African-Americans on television, shifting the gaze from inner-city poverty and violence to the vibrancy of the Black Arts Movement.”

This year’s Audience Award for best short went to director Emmanuel Vaughan-Lee’s Earthrise (29 minutes), about the first image of Earth taken from space in 1968.

AFI Docs 2018 featured 92 films from 22 countries, covering a myriad of topics ranging from the environment and sports to politics and art.

Michael Lumpkin, previously the director of the festival, was named director of AFI Festivals, including AFI Docs and AFI Fest, in mid-June.
