Hip-hop icon and actor/producer LL Cool J is set to executive produce a new docuseries for MSNBC on what Americans have considered “cool” across the decades.

Produced by LL Cool J, Part2 Pictures and Getty Images, Story of Cool (3 x 60 minutes) takes a look at what was “cool” throughout various eras and examines the people, places and things that define this amorphous word.

Each episode explores a new element of “cool”, from the rise of prominent leaders and product advertisements, to how the battle for “cool” has elevated cultural icons that shape the world.

The series also features interviews with special guests including Ice Cube, James Corden, DMC, Kierna Mayo, Shepard Fairey, Maverick Carter and Malcolm Gladwell.

Story of Cool was created by Jonathan Gruber and Tom Cohen. Executive producers include LL Cool J, David Shadrack Smith and Amy Bucher for Part2, Gene Foca for Getty Images, Gruber and Cohen.

Story of Cool premieres  July 1 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MSNBC.
