Discovery’s mystery and suspense network Investigation Discovery has commissioned London-based indie Arrow Media to produce two new true crime series.
Anchoring the order is The Devil Speaks (pictured), a 6 x 60-minute series that uses real audio recordings to peel back the layers of an infamous murder investigation in America. The series will combine real footage, police interviews, archive and reconstruction to walk viewers through the investigation and piece together a deadly chain of events. The Devil Speaks debuts August 21 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
Murder mystery series What Lies Beneath (6 x 60 minutes), meanwhile, will provide insight into the most compelling real-life murder investigations that have plagued the U.S. Through a combination of real courtroom footage, archive, interviews and dramatic reconstructions, the series will offer a glimpse into the lives about to be overturned by a brutal murder and flashes forward to the murder trial to give clues as to what is about to unfold.
Arrow’s Sam Starbuck executive produces both The Devil Speaks and What Lies Beneath.
ID has also bolstered its true crime programming lineup with three all-new series coming to its slate this summer.
ID’s mid-summer schedule begins with the Lucky 8 TV and First Watch Productions-produced Dark Waters: Murder In The Deep, which takes viewers deep into the world of murder on the water when it premieres July 31 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Investigation Discovery’s Lorna Thomas serves as senior executive producer. Lucky 8′s Greg Henry, Kim Woodard and First Watch’s Mike Sheridan and Joe Venafro are listed as exec producers.
Someone You Thought You Knew from Anomaly Entertainment turns the lens on the ones you’d never suspect and the killers hiding dark secrets. The series broadcasts on August 2 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Anomaly’s Matthew Kelly, Michael Sorensen and Mark Marabella are EPs alongside ID’s senior EP Jeanie Vink.
Finally, The Last Defense will explore the flaws in the American justice system through in-depth examinations of the Death Row cases of Darlie Routier and Julius Jones. The provocative two-night special tracks the path that led both Routier and Jones to their places on Death Row, while diving deep into their personal stories. The special transmits August 26 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ID, following its premiere on American commercial broadcaster ABC.
The Last Defense is executive produced by Viola Davis, Julius Tennon and Andrew Wang for JuVee Productions; Christine Connor and Lee Beckett for XCON Productions; Vanessa Potkin, Aida Leisenring and Morgan Hertzan for Lincoln Square Productions. Investigation Discovery’s Elizabeth Stephenson is executive producer.
