New York headquartered indie distributor Abramorma has inked a deal with Cinereach for the U.S. theatrical release of Steve Loveridge’s intimate documentary about British musician M.I.A.

Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. chronicles the rise of the Academy Award-nominated musician, starting with her immigration from Sri Lanka to England as a young girl. Drawn from personal video recordings from the past 22 years, Loveridge’s film draws an intimate portrait of the acclaimed artist, fashion icon, activist, and her ascent from refugee immigrant to pop star.

Elevation Pictures will be distributing the film in Canada. Dogwoof will be releasing it in the UK and handling international sales.

The 96-minute film originally premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, where it took home the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award. The doc has since screened at festivals across the U.S. including opening New Directors/New Films at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and internationally at Berlin and Hot Docs, amongst others.

Abramorama also recently acquired the U.S. and Canadian theatrical rights to Paula Eiselt’s directorial debut, 93Queen.

Matangi/Maya /M.I.A. will screen across the U.S. beginning Sept. 28.
