New York-headquartered Big Fish Entertainment, an MGM Company, has bolstered its creative department with the addition of seasoned development executive Daniel Markell.

Markell joins the Live PD prodco as SVP of development and will be responsible for managing the company’s unscripted and scripted content development for linear digital and streaming platforms. Additionally, he will oversee Big Fish’s development team while also identifying brand and talent opportunities.

He reports directly into chief creative officer Lucilla D’Agostino.

Prior to joining the Big Fish team, Markell served as SVP of development at Silver Springs-based Sirens Media, overseeing the label’s development slate and team. Joining in 2014, Markell developed such unscripted series as Freeform’s The Letter, Cooking Channel’s Cheap Eats, TLC’s Twirl Life and Discovery’s Tesla’s Death Ray: A Murder Declassified.

Markell has also developed a variety of unscripted series for such networks as A&E, Animal Planet, Food Network, FYI, History, ID and Oxygen, among others. He began his career as a casting producer on ABC’s Wife Swap before moving into directing and producing such series as TLC’s Four Weddings.

“Big Fish has experienced tremendous growth this year, and we’re positioning ourselves to continue on that trajectory in a strategic and sustainable way,” said D’Agostino in a statement. We’re very excited to welcome Daniel to the team whose instincts for incredibly sharp and envelope-pushing content will help us keep setting the bar higher, and explore new creative territory across all platforms.”

The appointment follows a wave of high-profile movement from Big Fish, which in June was acquired by MGM as part of the studio’s endeavor to expand its roster of television industry-leading unscripted producers and production companies. Earlier this year, Big Fish teamed with Rovio Entertainment on Angry Birds Challenge, the first live-action game show of the mobile game property, and was commissioned by MTV to produce a localized version of the reality competition format Just Tattoo of Us.
