Lionsgate-backed network Starz has acquired Shawn Rech’s feature-length crime documentary White Boy.

The 82-minute film, which screened at DOC NYC in 2017, chronicles the story of 17-year-old Richard Wershe, Jr. who, in the 1980s, ran a sophisticated underground cocaine operation throughout inner-city Detroit.

The doc investigates Wershe’s criminal empire by interviewing those closest to the case, including journalists, police, FBI agents and hit men, in an effort to set the record straight on the urban legend known as “White Boy Rick.”

Arrested as a teen and sentenced to life without parole, Wershe remains behind bars 30 years later, and is the subject of the Sony feature film White Boy Rick, starring Matthew McConaughey.

Submarine Entertainment’s Matt Burke brokered the deal on behalf of the filmmakers.

White Boy will premiere across Starz in Spring 2019.
