British commercial television network Channel 5 has commissioned ITV Studios-backed The Garden Productions for a live and uncut hospital series.

Operation: Live (3 x 120 minutes) will go into the UK operating rooms of St. Bartholomew’s and The Royal London Hospitals of Barts Health NHS Trust as surgeries are being performed.

Each night, the program will broadcast live as audiences follow a life-changing operation in its entirety, with surgeons performing the procedures guiding viewers through every incision in real time. Expert commentary will explain the stages of the procedure as they unfold, when needed.

Audiences will also witness the nerve-wracking wait of the patient’s closest family as they wait for their loved ones to undergo surgery. 

The three operations undertaken on the series include an aortic valve replacement, a total knee replacement, and a right hemicolectomy, which removes a portion of a cancerous bowel.

Operation: Live will premiere across C5 later this year.
