The eighth annual edition of DOC NYC kicks off this week – running Nov. 8 to 15 – and will host many world premieres, including that of Sam Hobkinson and Havana Marking’s feature-length documentary The Kleptocrats. But ahead of the screening, realscreen presents an exclusive clip of the 84-minute film.
The investigative film documents one of the world’s biggest white-collar heists when US$3.5 billion was allegedly stolen from a Malaysian government wealth fund called 1Malaysia Development Berhad – portions of which were alleged to have been used to bankroll the 2013 Leonardo DiCaprio blockbuster The Wolf of Wall Street.
Investigative journalists from the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and the Hollywood Reporter managed to trace the money trail and unravel the scheme.
In 2016, the United States Justice Department laid claim to profits from The Wolf of Wall Street, with the prodco behind the film, Red Granite Pictures, which was co-founded by the stepson of Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, agreeing to pay the U.S. government $60 million to settle claims that it benefited from the massive Malaysian corruption scandal.
The Kleptocrats is executive produced by Alex Soros, Louise Story, Mike Lerner, Anna Godas, Alex Helan and Andy Stewart. Lerner also serves as a producer on the film.
London-based distributor Dogwoof is handling worldwide distribution for the film.
- The Kleptocrats enjoys its world premiere at the IFC Center on Friday, Nov. 9 at 6:45 p.m. ET.
