MIPCOM Picks best in show winner Free Solo (pictured) is among the 166 feature-length documentary films submitted for consideration for the 91st Academy Awards.

Other titles include last summer’s breakout hits RBG, Three Identical Strangers and Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, as well as Michael Moore’s latest political manifesto Fahrenheit 11/9.

While the number of submissions is lower than last year’s 170, it still marks a considerably larger number of titles than the 145 and 124 submissions in 2016 and 2015, respectively.

Several of the films will still have to meet qualifying rules, including theatrical requirements like an LA and New York release.

For the first time, films that have won a qualifying award at a competitive film festival or have been submitted in the Foreign Language Film category as their country’s official selection are also eligible in the category.

A shortlist of 15 films will be announced on Dec. 17. The final nominations for the 91st Academy Awards, including Best Documentary Feature, will be announced on Jan. 22.

The ceremony will be held Feb. 24 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood. It will be televised live on ABC and in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.
