Bing Liu’s critically acclaimed directorial debut Minding the Gap, a portrait of youthful friendship in America’s Rust Belt, leads the non-fiction nominations for the 12th annual Cinema Eye Honors.

The Hulu original film (pictured) documents the lives of three skateboarding friends and the correlation between their tumultuous upbringings in their hometown of Rockford, Illinois – hit hard by decades of recession – and their current adult responsibilities. Utilizing 12 years of footage, the doc touches on such topics as modern-day masculinity, racial identity, death, birth, relationships and more.

Minding the Gap, which had its world premiere at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, picked up seven nominations, tying the all-time Cinema Eye Honors record, including noms for direction, editing, cinematography, original score, debut feature and the audience award, in addition to outstanding achievement in non-fiction feature filmmaking, the organization’s top prize.

The film was also mentioned in the “Unforgettables” category, honoring the subjects of the year’s documentaries.

Liu’s seven nominations ties the Cinema Eye record also held by Louie PsihoyosThe Cove, Lixin Fan’s Last Train Home and Ari Folman’s Waltz with Bashir.

Competing alongside Minding the Gap in the best feature category are Robert Greene‘s Bisbee ’17; RaMell Ross’ Hale County This Morning, This Evening; Talal Derki’s Of Fathers and SonsTim Wardle‘s Three Identical Strangers; and Morgan Neville‘s Won’t You Be My Neighbor?.
