ID greenlights John Wayne Gacy special

Discovery’s mystery and suspense network Investigation Discovery is preparing a series aimed at identifying the remains of unknown victims of notorious serial killer John Wayne Gacy.

The three-part limited series, Deadly Legacy, will center on Cook County Police Department detective sergeant Jason Moran, a one-man cold case unit, as he seeks out new DNA technology that could finally give eight grieving families closure 40 years after Gacy terrorized the streets of Chicago.

Over the course of the series, Moran will review missing person’s cases, comb through tips and scour evidence to narrow in on three missing persons. The special will also feature interviews with the family, friends, and original investigators of each potential victim in an attempt to ultimately solve each case.

Throughout the 1970s, Gacy lured 33 young men to their deaths, killing them by asphyxiation or strangulation with a makeshift tourniquet. Gacy buried the remains of 26 of his victims in the crawl space of his home. Three more were buried across his property in Chicago, while the bodies of his last four known victims were discarded in the Des Plaines River.

Gacy was executed by lethal injection on May 10, 1994.

Deadly Legacy is produced by Raw TV, with Crispin Reece as director, Mark Lewis as executive producer, Simon Mills as supervising producer and Olive King as story producer.

Tim Baney is exec producer for ID.

Deadly Legacy premieres Dec. 9 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ID.
