Viacom-owned Comedy Central UK has commissioned Fremantle prodco Thames for a reboot of the cult quiz gameshow format Blockbusters, with two series set for early 2019.

British comedian Dara O Briain (pictured) will host the revived 20 x 30-minute series which is currently in pre-production and will include two celebrity specials.

The format pits students and sixth formers against one another as they take on the “gold run”. The new reboot will stick to the original format, with players crossing a hexagonal board by answering quiz questions correlating to a letter, for a chance to win a prize.

The original version of the show aired on British commercial broadcaster ITV in the 1980s and ’90s and was hosted by radio and television presenter Bob Holness. The format was originally developed by Steve Ryan for Mark Goodson-Bill Todman Productions for NBC in 1980.

Blockbusters has been commissioned by Louise Holmes, VP and GM, Comedy Central UK and developed by Chris Curley, head of development, Comedy Central UK. The series will be executive produced by Phil Harris for Thames.

The reboot of Blockbusters aligns with Comedy Central UK’s “ongoing push to diversify its British comedy offering and increase the volume of non-scripted comedy it broadcasts.”

“One of the UK’s most beloved gameshow formats, Blockbusters is an iconic show that a lot of people hold close to their hearts,” said Holmes, in a statement. “Dara O Briain is the perfect quizmaster for the comedy reboot of this nostalgic show.”
