AMPLE Entertainment and Rebecca Halpern Productions have partnered with award-winning artist and Chicago native Common (pictured) and his Freedom Road Productions for a political docuseries about the upcoming 2019 mayoral election in the Windy City.

Chicago/2019 is a real-time docuseries set around the upcoming 2019 mayoral race that could make history by seeing its populace elect its first black female, gay, or Latino mayor. The 21 candidates running for the city’s top job make up the largest, most diverse pool of mayoral candidates the city has ever seen.

Chicago/2019 follows these candidates as they fight for votes in a powerhouse city that is a microcosm of the country. With intense violence, racial segregation, failing schools, and a looming pension crisis, Chicago is emblematic of the issues raging across America.

Executive producers on the docuseries include Common, Derek Dudley and Shelby Stone for Freedom Road Productions; Ari Mark and Phil Lott for AMPLE Entertainment; Rebecca Halpern and Michael Masters for Rebecca Halpern Productions; and Susan Cronin.

“The story of America is playing out in Chicago and it’s happening now,” said AMPLE co-president Mark in a statement. “With our partners, a team of Chicago natives with deep personal roots, we can capture this pivotal chapter in Chicago’s history through the lens of their upcoming mayoral race with a raw, live authenticity.”

“This show is especially important to me because it has the chance to influence Chicago’s future,” added Common. “We all know the city has had its trials and tough times, but I believe in a better Chicago and better days for the people of Chicago. I’m happy that this show can contribute to its healing and rebuilding by giving the truth and letting the people take it from there.”
