ZDF Enterprises, the commercial arm for German pubcaster ZDF, has acquired a full stake in the Dutch indie non-fiction content company Off the Fence.
Ellen Windemuth (pictured), founder and CEO of the distributor-producer, will continue in her role at the Off the Fence group. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
Founded in 1994, Off the Fence Productions has created more than 500 hours of television content for a range of international broadcasters including History Channel, MTV, BBC, Channel 4, PBS and National Geographic. The Amsterdam-based factual producer creates content across multiple genres, including science, history, human stories, adventure and natural history.
Their work has garnered more than 80 awards, including Royal Television Society, Emmy and Golden Panda.
Meanwhile, the distributor has a catalog of over 6,500 hours of programming across wildlife, science, history, travel, people and culture, and lifestyle genres, including Love & Hip Hop and Kendra on Top. The company has sales offices in Amsterdam, London, Cape Town and Mainz.
“We are very excited to join such a clever and dynamic group,” said Windemuth in a statement. “We have worked closely together for twenty years, and there is a lot of mutual respect. We have developed a synergistic common strategy, and I look forward to realizing it together.”
“Ellen has been a valued partner of ZDF Enterprises in general and for ZDFE.unscripted in particular for many years,” added Fred Burcksen, president and CEO of ZDF Enterprises. “We have always admired her innovative strength, creative spirit and economical power. For all of us, it was the next logical step in our partnership to join forces and networks in order to enable us to jointly be even more successful in the future.”
