The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has unveiled the 2019 nominees for the British Academy Film Awards, including documentary features and shorts across three categories, with McQueen leading the pack and box office darlings RBG and Three Identical Strangers vying for the doc award.
Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui’s McQueen (pictured) is nominated in both the Outstanding British Film and Documentary categories. The film explores the life of British fashion designer Alexander McQueen, who started his career in his teens before becoming a designer for Givenchy and launching his own label. McQueen took his own life in 2010.
Also up for the Documentary prize are summer stand-outs RBG, from Julie Cohen and Betsy West, and Three Identical Strangers, from Tim Wardle, Grace Hughes-Hallett and Becky Read. RBG follows the life and career of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, while Three Identical Strangers tells the story of identical triplets, separated at birth and reunited later in life.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin’s Free Solo and Peter Jackson’s They Shall Not Grow Old round out the nominees. Free Solo chronicles Alex Honnold’s quest to ascend Yosemite National Park’s 3,000-foot El Capitan “free solo” (without a climbing partner or safety ropes), while They Shall Not Grow Old offers a colorized glimpse at the lives of the men on the front lines of World War I.
Free Solo, RBG and Three Identical Strangers have also all been shortlisted in the documentary category at the 2019 Academy Awards.
Non-fiction titles also garnered noms outside the dedicated documentary category, with documentary shorts 73 Cows by Alex Lockwood and Bachelor, 38 by Angela Clarke earning nods in the British Short Film category.
The nominations were announced by Hayley Squires and Will Poulter at BAFTA’s London headquarters on Jan. 9. The awards ceremony will be hosted by Joanna Lumley on Feb. 10 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. It will be broadcast exclusively on BBC1 and BBC1 HD around the world.
