Former ZDF commissioning editor and specialist factual producer Ralf Blasius has passed away at the age of 51.
Blasius died unexpectedly on January 9 in Mainz, Germany.
While at ZDF, Blasius was an important part of the natural history and science commissioning teams and was behind such projects as Armageddon and Tsunami: A Wave Moves the World.
From there he moved to the production side at Off the Fence in Amsterdam and Mainz, where he worked on multi-part series. In 2011 he established his own production outfit, k22film in Mainz. It was at that point he began working on the ZDF strand ‘Terra X.’
In 2014 he was awarded The Bavarian Television Prize, for Expedition Deutschland. The follow-up, Expedition Europe, was two years in the making and premiered on January 6, days before his passing.
“Thank you Ralf for all the years we had the chance to work with you,” said Wolfram Giese, managing director at K22 Film in a statement. “For the many creative hours in which we worked on scripts, pictures and texts. For your ability to always think new and different.
“ZDF Terra X lost a brilliant filmmaker, the rest of us lost a wonderful person.”
