Jeremy Xido’s The Bones and Lin Alluna’s Twice Colonized (pictured) are among the 20 projects headed to this year’s Hot Docs Forum, an international documentary market and pitching event.

Selected from more than 325 international submissions, the 20 documentaries will be presented to a round table of leading international commissioning editors during the mornings of April 30 and May 1. As the pitches are made, fellow producers, distributors, sales agents, film programmers, private investors, funders and other buyers will look on from an observers gallery.

Returning for a third year will be the First Look Pitch Prize, which will award top projects with a total of CA$100,000 (US$75,000), while the Corus-Hot Docs Forum Pitch Prize will be awarded to the best Canadian pitch for the 11th consecutive year. The winner of the Forum Pitch Prize will receive CA$10,000 to be used towards the production and completion budget of their project.

Meanwhile, the Cuban Hat Award returns for its 10th year with all the money raised over the two-day event given to the observers’ favorite pitch, as determined by ballot, and then matched by Hot Docs. Finally, the Mounties’ Hat Pitch offers Hot Docs Forum observers the opportunity to secure a last-minute presentation slot during the event, as determined by a business card raffle.

Winners will be announced during the Hot Docs Forum closing awards ceremony on May 1.

Participating decision makers confirmed to date include A&E Networks, Amazon Original Movies, ARTE, Al Jazeera English, BBC Storyville, CNN Films, Discovery Communications, Field of Vision, HBO Documentary Films, National Geographic, The New York Times Op-Docs, Netflix, TVO, and Vice, among others.

“This is our most daring and international scope of projects to date,” said Dorota Lech, Hot Docs industry programmer and Forum producer, in a statement. “We can’t wait to highlight these poetic, powerful and tremendously inspired films at the Hot Docs Forum, our flagship industry financing and co-production event.”
