A+E-owned female-focused channel Lifetime has greenlit a docuseries on beleaguered financier Jeffrey Epstein, as well as a four-hour follow-up to the lauded Surviving R. Kelly project, as revealed during the network’s session at the 2019 Television Critics Association summer press tour.
Surviving Jeffrey Epstein will focus on the billionaire New York financier (pictured), who is alleged to have used his connections to the rich and famous to shield predatory behavior with young girls. Epstein, who was registered as a sex offender following the outcome of another case in Florida in 2008, was arrested by the FBI earlier this month on federal charges for sex trafficking of minors in Florida and New York.
Surviving Jeffrey Epstein is produced by Emmy-winner Robert Friedman’s Bungalow Media + Entertainment in association with award-winning filmmakers Anne Sundberg and Ricki Stern.
Sundberg and Stern are set to direct with journalist Christopher Mason, a long-time contributor to The New York Times and New York Magazine, also attached to the project.
The American network is also expanding its footprint into the investigative documentary space with Surviving R. Kelly: The Aftermath, which will offer even deeper insight into the case surrounding the disgraced R&B singer who is currently facing federal and state charges for sex crimes and racketeering. Produced by Kreativ Inc., the four-hour special features interviews with psychologists, experts on the case and additional survivors who provide intimate details of Kelly’s abusive behavior.
The special will be executive produced by Joel Karsberg and Jessie Daniels of Kreativ Inc., dream hampton, Tamra Simmons, Maria Pepin with Bunim/Murray Productions and Brie Miranda Bryant who executive produces for Lifetime. Sudi Khosropur is co-executive producer and showrunner for Surviving R. Kelly: The Aftermath.
Finally, Lifetime will produce an untitled documentary companion piece to a Wendy Williams-centered scripted biographical film. The doc will reveal the highs and lows Williams has experienced throughout her career as a television host, author, fashion designer, and media personality. Entertainment One and Creature Films produce.
