Rakuten TV, the VOD streaming platform of Japanese e-commerce marketplace Rakuten, has commissioned the sports-centric docuseries Matchday: Inside FC Barcelona.

Narrated by two-time Academy Award-nominated actor John Malkovich, Matchday will provide an exclusive window into the seminal Spanish giants throughout the club’s 2018-2019 season.

The 8 x 45-minute original docuseries will offer a look into the private moments behind the team’s culture and philosophy, as well as its successes and challenges in recent history, including how players prepare for the El Clásico versus league rivals Real Madrid C.F.

The fly-on-the-wall docuseries will additionally feature intimate insights into the lives off the Camp Nou pitch of star players including team captain Lionel Messi, central defender Gerard Piqué, goalkeeper Marc-André Ter Stegen and controversial Uruguayan striker Louis Suárez.

Matchday is produced in-house by the Spanish football team’s own Barça Studios, in collaboration with Kosmos Studios, Rakuten, Inc. in association with Rakuten H Collective Studio and Producciones del Barrio.

Matchday: Inside FC Barcelona premieres exclusively on Rakuten TV in Europe this November, to be followed by a Japanese premiere and distribution globally by Rakuten through its content partners.
