Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert’s American Factory and Asif Kapadia‘s Diego Maradona (pictured) are among the feature-length projects to be shortlisted in the best feature category for the International Documentary Association’s (IDA) Documentary Awards this year.

On Thursday (Oct. 10), the IDA unveiled its list of 30 feature films that have advanced in the voting process alongside the 21 films shortlisted in the shorts category. Of those named below, up to 10 projects will earn nominations in each of the feature and short documentary categories.

This year the IDA received 785 submissions, including 375 documentary features, 153 documentary shorts, 124 documentary series, 89 student films, 44 podcasts and 48 music documentaries.

“The feature and short documentaries on this year’s IDA shortlists represent a remarkable breadth of work,” said Simon Kilmurry, executive director of the IDA, in a statement. “These films are urgent clarion calls for action, they are exposing injustice and inhumanity, they are love stories and offer great hope – and they contain the full breadth of the human experience. They have all earned deserved attention.”

The nominees for all 16 categories – including best episodic series, best multi-part documentary and the inaugural best director award – will be announced on Oct. 23.

All craft awards will now be selected by cinematographers, editors, writers and composers.

The 35th annual IDA Documentary Awards will be presented during a ceremony at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles on Dec. 7.
