Academy Awards race heats up with 159 documentary titles in consideration

Todd Douglas Miller’s Apollo 11, Asif Kapadia‘s Diego Maradona (pictured), Nanfu Wang and Lynn Zhang’s One Child Nation and Lauren Greenfield’s The Kingmaker are among the projects submitted in the Documentary Feature category for the 92nd annual Academy Awards.

Though several of the films have not yet had their required Los Angeles and New York qualifying releases, a total of 159 titles have been put forward for consideration by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science in the Oscar race.

Other notable films long-listed this year include Feras Fayyad’s The CaveAlex Gibney‘s Citizen K, Roger Ross Williams’ The Apollo, Viktor Kossakovsky’s Aquarela, John Chester‘s The Biggest Little Farm, Mark Deeble and Victoria Stone’s The Elephant Queen, Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts’ For Sama, Tamara Kotevska and Ljubo Stefanov’s Honeyland, Rachel Lears’ Knock Down the House, Chris Smith’s Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened, Jillian Schlesinger’s Maiden, Luke Lorentzen’s Midnight FamilyBrett Story‘s The Hottest August, Barak Goodman and Jamila Ephron’s Woodstock: Three Days That Defined a Generation, Tim Travers Hawkins’ XY Chelsea, Martin Scorsese’s Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin ScorsesePetra Costa‘s The Edge of Democracy, Thom Zimny and Bruce Springsteen’s Western Stars, and Morgan Spurlock‘s Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken. 

Documentary features that have won a qualifying award at a competitive film festival or have been submitted in the International Feature Film category as their country’s official selection are also eligible in the category.

Voting for the shortlist will end on Dec. 10, with a shortlist of 15 films announced six days later on Dec. 16. The final nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards, including Best Documentary Feature, will be announced on Jan. 13, 2020.

The 92nd Oscars ceremony will be held on Feb. 9, 2020, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood. It will be televised live on ABC and in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.
