NHK to consolidate three channels into two HD channels

NHK will launch two HD channels when it revamps its satellite broadcasting next April. Two SD channels and one HD channel will become BS1 and BS Premium, according to the plan authorized by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. BS1 focus on world affairs and major sports events, while BS Premium will offer entertainment and culture programming. BS Premium will include nature, music, history, arts, and more. The digital switchover in Japan is expected to be complete by July 24, 2011.
