Family Affair, from first time documentary filmmaker Chico Colvard and coproduced by Liz Garbus (Bobby Fischer Against the World), is making its TV premiere on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network on March 1.

Colvard’s feature-length film documents his family’s struggle with abuse and its complex family dynamic, beginning with an incident in which the filmmaker accidentally shot his sister in the leg at the age of 10.  Thirty years later, Colvard sets out to break the veil of silence and attempt to understand the cycle of abuse that has engulfed his family.

The doc made the festival rounds, screening at Sundance Film Festival, Hot Docs, Full Frame, Silverdocs and IDA DocuWeeks, and picked up awards at Atlanta Film Festival and others. It was announced as the first film selected for the OWN Documentary Club back in 2010, prior to the network’s January 2011 launch.

OWN will air Family Affair on March 1 at 8 p.m. EST/PST.
