Britain’s Channel 5 has picked up the American version of Endemol USA’s long-running reality competition series Fear Factor.
The show, which has been sold in more than 180 countries, will debut on the broadcaster’s digital channel, 5*, later this summer. It originally premiered on NBC in the United States in May 2001, where it aired until 2006. In December, NBC revived the show as Fear Factor 2.0 after noticing that repeats were drawing high ratings on sister cable net Chiller.
The format involves four teams of two competing for US$50,000 in prize money by undertaking a series of grueling stunts, such as eating bugs and navigating extreme heights.
The deal was negotiated by Marie-Claire Dunlop, Channel 5’s acquisitions manager, and Gisela Asimus-Minnbergh, Endemol Worldwide Distribution’s sales director for the UK and Eire.
