Spurlock dons Warpaint

The director behind POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold has teamed up with Snoot Entertainment's Keith Calder and commercials veteran Shannon Lords to form Warpaint, a commercials prodco that will feature doc makers Liz Garbus and Gary Hustwit as well as Black Swan helmer Darren Aronofsky.

Morgan Spurlock, director of the brand-buffeted documentary POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, is launching a commercials production company with Keith Calder of Snoot Entertainment (The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, The Wackness) and veteran commercial producer Shannon Lords.

Unlike Nonfiction Unlimited, which offers up a roster exclusively comprised of docmakers (including Albert Maysles, Steve James and Barbara Kopple), Warpaint will feature doc-makers such as Liz Garbus, Michael Tucker and Gary Hustwit on its roster, as well as narrative directors such as Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan), Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes).

Spurlock will also direct spots through the prodco, as will Adam Wingard, Adam Lisegar, Maggie Choo and Damien Toogood.

“After working directly with brands and advertising agencies in the placement expos√© The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, as well as directing multiple commercial spots for other production companies, I saw an opportunity to create a much more director driven entity,” said Spurlock. “Within Warpaint, our directors will have the freedom to not only experiment with new technologies¬†and formats, but they will also own a larger stake in their work moving forward.”

According to the company website, Warpaint aims to “create a positive environment where we can support creative diversity for our established directors as well as flexibility for our emerging visionaries to expand their craft.”

The company will have offices in New York, London and Los Angeles.
