U.S. networks CBS and PBS were the big winners at the 34th annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards, taking home 12 and nine awards respectively.
PBS scored a win in the Outstanding Nature Programming category with ‘Nature’ special An Original DUCKumentary; and also took home trophies for ‘Frontline’ specials The Interrupters (pictured above); The Battle for Syria; Inside Japan’s Nuclear Meltdown; Opium Brides; Money, Power, and Wall Street; and Big Sky, Big Money.
In addition, ‘Frontline’ founder and exec producer David Fanning received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Terrestrial broadcaster CBS, meanwhile, scored wins across the board in the news categories, earning acclaim for its morning and evening news programs, features stories, business and economic reporting, editing, and presidential election night coverage.
Elsewhere, HBO Documentary Films scored victories in the Best Documentary and Outstanding Arts & Culture Programming categories, with Saving Face winning the former, and Marina Abramović: The Artist is Present triumphing in the latter.
There were also victories for Discovery Channel, History and National Geographic, with the latter taking the Outstanding Science and Technology Programming prize for its much-lauded, Red Bull-produced Space Dive.
Last night’s (October 1) New York-based awards show was attended by more than 900 television and news media industry executives, news and documentary producers and journalists.
