Ben Cotner and Ryan White’s award-winning gay rights documentary¬†The Case Against 8¬†is getting a U.S. theatrical release by HBO Documentary Films on June 6, followed by a June 23 premiere on the TV network.

The film – which follows the landmark Supreme Court case that overturned Proposition 8, California’s ban on same-sex marriage, in June 2013 – nabbed the directing award in the U.S. documentary category at the Sundance Film Festival this past January, and most recently picked up the audience award at SXSW.

“We feel it’s important to bring the story of the men and women behind this roller-coaster battle to screens across the country, and we’re extremely proud to bring attention to a fundamental civil rights issue that faces the country today,” said Sheila Nevins, president of HBO Documentary Films, in a statement.

The Case Against 8 will received an awards-qualifying limited release in New York and Los Angeles on June 6, and will expand to select U.S. cities June 13.
