Upfronts ’14: Discovery en Espanol orders automotives, magic

Automotive-themed reality series Texas trocas (pictured), Cromo clandestino and Taller de Vaca join survival and magic programs on Discovery en Español’s 2014/2015 slate.

The Discovery Communications-owned U.S. Hispanic cable network has reorganized its schedule around specific themes based on results from an audience research study, it said.

Meanwhile, sister network Discovery Familia has unveiled a slate of female-skewing programs focused on parenting, health, cooking and beauty.

The three automotive-themed series will air on Discovery en Español as part of the network’s ‘Lunes de Motores’ (‘Motor Mondays’) strand, alongside a new season of El dúo mecánico (Fast N’ Loud).

Texas trocas is a reality series set in a big-rig trucking business outside San Antonio; Cromo clandestino (Chrome Underground) follows a pair of professional car hunters into lawless countries; and Taller de Vaca is an automotive refurbishing series.

The network will also premiere Al límite (Tethered), in which opposing survival experts endure 21 days in harsh environments while tied together at the waist by a six-foot steel cable; as well as Sálvate si puedes (Survive That), a seven-part series about five elite survivalist who are captured, blindfolded and taken to a remote location. Discovery en Español will also air season two of Supervivencia al desnudo (Naked & Afraid).

The network’s ‘Enigma’ block of magic programming will include Mago Pop starring Spanish National Magic Prize winner Antonio Diaz; and a new season of paranormal series Lo inexplicable (Unexplained File).

Other programs include the news magazine Crimen mortal (Deadline Crime) featuring host Tamron Hall; a new season of Crímenes millonarios (Behind Mansion Walls); Islas mortales con Dave Salmoni (Mystery of the Lost Island) starring animal expert Dave Salmoni; the six-part blue-chip natural history series Sobrevivir (Survival); and the wildlife special Brasil salvaje (Wild Brazil).

The specials El Vaticano (The Vatican) and Comando  Jungla (Jungla Comandos),about the Columbian anti-narcotics unit Los Junglas, round out the slate.

New series airing on Discovery Familia are Soy muy joven para esto (I don’t have time for this), about young women dealing with breast cancer; and Sobreprotegidos (World’s Worst Mom), a reality series about Lenore Skenazy, a mother, author and parenting expert who ignited controversy after she let her nine-year-old son ride the New York City subway alone.

Volver a empezar (Starting Over) follows eight women through career makeovers; and La simpleza del hogar (House Made Simple) is a home makeover series in which experts help families undertake a massive home clean-up and reorganization.

Returning series set to air on the network include Cake Boss; the Buddy Valastro-starring El desafío de Buddy (Cake Boss: Next Great Baker); Un bebé por minuto: la historia continua (One Born Every Minute: What Happened Next); Acumuladores (Hoarding: Buried Alive); Desafío fashionista (Ultimate Shopper); Vívala o véndala (Love it or List it); and ¡No te lo pongas! (What Not to Wear).
