UK-based distributor Cineflix Rights has acquired the international rights to the ABC Family reality series Becoming Us (pictured).

Produced by Ryan Seacrest Productions, the 10 x 60-minute series is about a 17-year-old boy from Evanstan, Illinois whose parents decide to divorce after his father announces plans to transition to a woman.

The show is among a handful of transgender-focused reality shows to be greenlit in the United States in the wake of scripted hits Transparent and Orange Is The New Black, which feature transgender characters.

Discovery Life aired New Girls On The Block earlier this spring and TLC is eyeing a summer airdate for All That Jazz, starring YouTube star and trans activist Jazz Jennings.

“The show’s main theme has a real zeitgeist feel to it; but many of the other issues explored in Becoming Us – family, relationships and coming-of-age – are universal and we’re convinced audiences worldwide will really connect with them,” Cineflix Rights CEO Chris Bonney said in a statement.

Becoming Us premieres in the United States on ABC Family on June 8.
