CNN’s Parts Unknown presenter Anthony Bourdain, Discovery Channel’s Naked and Afraid (pictured) and Fox and Nat Geo’s science series reboot Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey were the big winners at the Realscreen Awards this evening (June 2), picking up prizes for outstanding host, best docuformat and best science and technology program, respectively.
In addition to winning outstanding achievement in hosting as well as most compelling character, the chef and author – as previously announced - was also named the Realscreen Awards’ 2015 Personality of the Year, and inducted into the organization’s Hall of Fame at the annual awards ceremony in Santa Monica, California.
“It’s many weeks, months out of the year, far from home and long absences from family, and some very dodgy plumbing, I can tell you,” said Bourdain in a previously taped video message. He was unable to attend due to a shoot in Borneo.
Also entering the Hall of Fame was Pilgrim Studios CEO and president Craig Piligian, who was one of the original executive producers of CBS’ competition series Survivor and has overseen such long-running series as American Chopper and Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe for Discovery Channel, while also steering his company towards a diverse range of programming, including series for OWN, CNN and Lifetime, among many other networks.
In accepting his award, Piligian told the audience gathered at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel: “When you have a bad day, a bad week, a bad month, those things happen but in the end of the day, in this business, it’s really a wonderful life.”
Meanwhile, CNN’s Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown picked up best non-fiction arts and culture program, while Discovery Channel’s Naked and Afraid took home best reality docuformat, as well as prizes for most original concept and an award of excellence for reality.
Elsewhere, Blue Chalk Media-produced web series First Sight: Sonia & Anita took the digital and branded content prize for web series, as well as winning outstanding achievement in cinematography as well as casting/talent/subjects.
Rounding out the evening’s multiple award-winners was Fox and National Geographic Channel’s Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey, which won best non-fiction science and technology program, along with an award of excellence for non-fiction.
