Talpa, Tencent team for web reality series

Dutch producer and The Voice  creator Talpa Media has teamed with Chinese Internet provider Tencent on an online reality format titled The 15 of Us (pictured).

Launching digitally today (June 23) on Tencent Video – the company’s online platform – The 15 of Us is loosely based on Talpa’s Utopia format and set on an “isolated mountain” in Tong Lu. The series brings together 15 individuals from different parts of China who must work individually and as a group to “help one another realize their dreams.”

According to a release issued by Talpa, “[Participants] need to work to create a new home, to be self-sufficient and to use all the land has to offer, as well as to earn money so that their dreams can actually be achieved.” 

The company added that more than 100,000 individuals applied to take part in the social experiment.

A Talpa spokesperson tells realscreen that the new venture “belongs to the same reality genre as Utopia, but it is quite different.”

The Dutch company – which was in May acquired by UK broadcaster ITV for £355 million (US$531.68 million) – says the program was specifically created to meet the needs of the Chinese market. Following today’s digital launch, the format will air on Dragon TV on June 29.
