American arts net Ovation TV has taken the U.S. premiere rights to the first two seasons of British competition series, Portrait Artist of the Year (pictured).

Produced by Storyvault Films for Sky Arts, Portrait Artist finds hosts Joan Bakewell and Frank Skinner and a group of judges challenging artists across the UK and Ireland to produce a portrait of one of three famous sitters. Some of the challenges include portraits of Sir Ian McKellen, Sophie Turner, Julian Fellowes, Richard Dawkins and Alan Cumming.

The series – distributed internationally by Zodiak Rights – is to debut on Ovation TV on October 18.

“This series hits on so many of Ovation’s key touchstones,” said Lori Hall, VP of scheduling and acquisitions for Ovation, in a statement. “Not only is it centered in the arts, but it focuses on the artistic process and celebrates the next generation of artists. The production itself is handled deftly, bringing the magic of capturing the nuances of a human face to life in a smart and totally entertaining way.”
