“Gogglebox” goes to South Africa

The Studio Lambert-created format Gogglebox is heading to South Africa.

UK distributor All3Media International has sold the program to Sony Pictures Television (SPT) South Africa, which has signed on for a 10 x 60-minute local version of the program.

Gogglebox originally aired on UK pubcaster Channel 4 and finds families and friends providing running commentary as they tune in to various television programs. The South African local version will be produced by Eject Media and Picture Tree, and is scheduled to air early next year on Sony Channel (DStv channel 127).

The South African deal marks the latest international adaptation of the series, which has aired in the U.S., Australia, Middle East and across Europe.

Elsewhere, Gogglebox has been optioned for French-speaking Africa by producer De Père En Fils Prods, as part of a package of formats including Cash CabCash At Your Door and Are You Normal?.

In advance of DISCOP Africa, the distributor’s other option deals in the region include Nigeria’s Media Vision taking primetime game show format The Cube, and South Africa’s Televisionaires optioning Undercover Boss. Finally, Rapid Blue – also in South Africa – has signed on for the game show Cash Mob.

All3Media International sales executive Jessica Cox said the company is seeing an “increased demand” for international entertainment and game show formats throughout Africa.

Sabrina Duguet, senior VP of international format sales at All3Media International, added: “Broadcasters and producers are looking for proven formats which are innovative and unique, yet also simple and cost-effective to adapt to local tastes and requirements. Gogglebox has been a standout success.”
