European sports and lifestyle producer-distributor Factory Media has acquired the international distribution rights to Soviet Megamonsters, an urban exploration series produced by Ukraine’s FILM.UA Group.
The deal, signed at MIPCOM 2016, extends to all regions, excluding the independent states that formerly made up the Soviet Union, the UK and North, Central and South America.
The 10 x 26-minute series takes adventure, science and history to a whole new level via the Insiders Project, a team of urban explorers who provide viewers with an in-depth look at the internal and external structures of some of the most fascinating industrial behemoths of the Soviet era, from Cold War bomb shelters to secret vaults and underground railway tunnels.
Season one explores abandoned tunnels and underground rivers, bridges, rooftops and industrial objects. Two episodes of the program form a Chernobyl Exclusion Zone special, and feature exclusive footage of the region, which has become a radioactive ghosttown since a catastrophic nuclear accident in 1986.
“Each episode gives an insider look into one Soviet heritage location. There’s one thing they share: they are all interesting, inaccessible, well-guarded and have historical significance. We’re inspired by the feedback we are getting and plan to expand the geography of our urban explorations in the future and offer viewers access to more unique locations,” said Kateryna Vyshnevska, head of developments and coproductions for FILM.UA Group.
Soviet Megamonsters is produced by Vyshnevska and Nikita Strizhevsky. Strizhevsky also shares director credits, along with Angel Angelov. Executive producer of the series is Andriy Ryzvanyuk.
