American cable network HBO is slated to showcase Abortion: Stories Women Tell from producer and director Tracy Droz Tragos.
In this doc, that premiered at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival, Tragos (pictured) sheds light on the issue of abortion in her native state of Missouri by focusing on women’s personal stories, as opposed to advocates or legislators. Because of the state’s restrictions and the availability of just one operating clinic, many women in Missouri travel across the state line, to Hope Clinic for Women in Granite City, Ill. — more than 100 miles from rural Missouri.
Drawing on access to the clinic, the film features interviews with a diverse group of women of all ages, backgrounds and faiths, as well as the doctors, nurses, staff and activists on both sides, hoping to sway decisions and lives.
The film provides a balanced looks at abortion through women’s own words and experiences. Through the film are short stories of women who have had an abortion recently or in the past. A few say they regret the decision, while others say they would not be where they are now if they hadn’t made that choice.
Abortion: Stories Women Tell airs April 3 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO. The documentary will also be available on HBO NOW, HBO GO, HBO On Demand and affiliate portals.
