Tang Media Partners-owned Global Road Entertainment is looking to build its documentary portfolio with a doc that tells the story of a little-known group of Holocaust survivors.
Co-produced with London indie Caravan, Avenging Evil was commissioned by UK pubcaster C4 to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
The 1 x 60-minute film, part of C4′s Secret History series, tells the story of a secret organization of Holocaust survivors known as the Avengers. In 1946, this group of men and women attempted to murder six million Germans as retribution for the six million Jewish people killed by the Nazis.
The film features testimony from the last surviving members of the group, including Auschwitz survivor Yehuda Maimon and Simcha Rotem – the last survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.
The doc features a tape recording made in 1985 in which the main members of the Avengers put on record what they did. The tape has never before been heard in public, and even those who appear on it have never heard it.
Using dramatic reconstruction, archive and eye-witness testimony, Avenging Evil aims to ask questions about how human beings might behave after being subjected to severe cruelty.
“This is a fascinating, little-known story that we felt needed to be told and is the perfect first project for us as we set out to build a documentary and factual portfolio alongside our upcoming slate of formats and reality content,” said president of Global Road’s unscripted and alternative television division Phil Gurin (pictured), in a statement. “Working with Dinah Lord’s Caravan in the UK demonstrates our approach to international collaboration on subjects that we believe will have a wide global audience.”
Global Road Entertainment is co-financing and handling worldwide rights, excluding the UK, to Avenging Evil.
