Cross-media company and newsreel archive British Pathé has penned a deal with international news agency Reuters to represent its historic archive filmed prior to 1980.
Under the pact, British Pathé will acquire complete, fully digitized collections of early cinema newsreels between 1910 and 1959, thereby more than doubling its content library of total film items to 208,000 and the date range covered to 1980.
The newsreels, cinemagazines and documentaries include archive materials from Gaumont Graphic and Gaumont British, Empire News Bulletin, British Paramount, and Visnews content from 1957 to 1979.
Featured in the newly added collection between the late-19th and 20th centuries are films depicting the Titanic setting off from Belfast, the Russian Tsar and his family, the suffragettes in their battle for the vote, the evacuation from the Battle of Dunkirk in 1940, and the coronation of Elizabeth II, decolonization and independence on the continent of Africa; as well as clips of the Beatles, Vietnam, Watergate, and the late Margaret Thatcher’s rise to power as the UK’s first female Prime Minister.
Items additionally spotlight the lives of ordinary civilians and famous faces, cooking techniques, fashion trends, travelogues, science and culture.
The original film reels for both collections are available for HD transfers.
Archivists and media professionals can begin licensing Reuters content via British Pathé’s website beginning today.
