FremantleMedia-owned Original Productions has named National Geographic Studio’s Jeff Hasler as its president.
Hasler will supervise and lead all development, production, business and strategic aspects of the company behind such series as Discovery’s Deadliest Catch and History’s Ice Road Truckers along with the support of Original’s senior team: Ernie Avila, COO and EVP, business affairs and Sarah Whalen, EVP development and programming. Both will report to Hasler.
Hasler joins Original Productions from National Geographic Studios where he served as executive vice president of production and development, shepherding all original non-scripted television, feature documentary and other projects including director Brett Morgan’s documentary, Jane; the Emmy-nominated series StarTalk with Neil deGrasse Tyson; Explorer; Gender Revolution with Katie Couric; and the Sports Emmy-nominated Breaking 2.
Previously, the veteran executive spent nearly five years as SVP of development and production for Discovery Channel, overseeing all programming for the cable net, and providing content for its international outlets, including such shows as Man v. Wild, Deadliest Catch, Dirty Jobs, Into the Wild, Storm Chasers, and its annual ‘Shark Week’ event.
As part of Discovery’s feature doc division at the time, Hasler also was involved in the commissioning and production of In the Shadow of the Moon, the Oscar-nominated Encounters at the End of the World and the Oscar-winning Man on Wire.
Before joining Discovery, Hasler served as director of programming at A&E, overseeing non-fiction and reality series including the docustrand ‘Biography.’
Hasler started his career in the industry as an independent feature and documentary filmmaker.
