British multi-channel operator UKTV’s comedy channel Gold has commissioned ITV Studios label Shiver to produce David Jason: Planes, Trains & Automobiles.
The 5 x 60-minute UKTV Original travelogue will follow English comedic actor David Jason (pictured) as he embarks on a one-month journey to America’s West Coast – traveling by road, rail and air – to explore the heritage of U.S. transport and the high-tech future.
The series will follow Jason as he travels 1,300 miles from Seattle to Los Angeles on the iconic Amtrak Coast Starlight train while also stopping off for numerous pit stops and excursions to experience astonishing feats of engineering – from riding 100-year-old cable cars and Harley Davidson motorbikes, to flying on a DC3 vintage airliner, driving the latest American Super Truck and investigating the prospect of sub-orbital space flight.
“All my life I’ve been obsessed with planes, trains and automobiles. And, of course, I’m well known for my association with the odd motor (including a certain three-wheeler),” said Jason in a statement. “The west coast of America has seen – and is still witnessing – some of the greatest innovations in transport history. I can’t wait to find out for myself how they do things over there. It’s going to be fun, it’s going to be entertaining, and I get the feeling I’m going to learn a great deal about this part of the world on my journey too.”
The series is executive produced by UKTV’s senior commissioning editor Iain Coyle, who commissioned the series, and Shiver’s Mike Blair. Chris Malone will direct.
David Jason: Planes, Trains & Automobiles is slated to premiere across UKTV’s Gold in 2019.
