London-based Chalkboard TV has appointed former BBC producer Jon Willers (pictured) to the role of full-time series producer as part of a strategy to bolster its presence in Scotland.
The expanded production unit, Chalkboard Scotland, will build on the success of two Chalkboard docuseries: the single-access doc Life Behind Bars: Visiting Hour and the school-based drama Logan High. Both series have been produced out of Glasgow since 2016.
Life Behind Bars was commissioned by Channel 4 in 2017 and provides a glimpse into visiting hour at Scotland’s maximum-security prison HMS Low Moss. Logan High was Chalkboard’s first kids’ commission from BBC and debuted earlier this year on CBBC.
Willers will step into his full-time role in Glasgow.
In less than 10 years in the business, Willers has produced a number of high-profile science, history and arts series for BBC1, BBC2, Channel 4 and National Geographic.
“We’ve had a production presence in Glasgow for two years now, and it feels like the right time to put down deeper roots,” said Mike Benson, executive producer and director of Chalkboard, in a statement. “I’ve worked with Jon before and he’s one of the most exciting young series producers in the country. With this calibre of talent on board, I’m confident that we’ll continue to build on the successful slate of shows we’ve already produced in Scotland.”
Chalkboard will announce more appointments to the Glasgow team in the coming months.
