Russian director Vitaly Mansky will offer a masterclass at the 10th annual Points North Forum, part of the 2018 Camden International Film Festival put on by the Points North Institute.

The forum includes workshops, residencies, masterclasses, panels, networking events and the Points North Pitch. It runs concurrently with the festival from Sept. 14 to 16 at the historic Camden Opera House and High Mountain Hall in Camden, Maine.

Forum highlights include a conversation between filmmakers Talal Derki and James Longley, as well as two “director’s commentary” sessions. One will explore sound and score with directors Mike Palmieri and Donal Mosher, and the other narrative construction with director Gabrielle Brady. Lindsay Utz and Enat Sidi will offer an editing masterclass, and contemporary artist Jill Magid will have an extended conversation with director Nathaniel Kahn.

The new Points North Agora will feature a series of informal conversations on the role of documentary, journalism and co-creation models in the “post-truth” age, with speakers including Astra Taylor, Alexis Bloom and Maxim Pozdorovkin.

At the Points North Pitch, six teams of filmmakers will work with industry mentors to present feature documentary works-in-progress to a top-level panel of funders, producers and broadcasters. The event is the culmination of the Points North Fellowship that runs yearlong, with audience members invited to contribute to live crowdfunding campaigns for the projects.

“It’s a privilege to bring together such a diverse, talented and accomplished group of filmmakers in Camden, where they can find creative inspiration and a welcoming, inclusive community,” said Points North Institute’s program director Sean Flynn in a statement. “Even better, these programs create opportunities to connect with major funders, distributors and producers in more personal ways than you’d find at most festivals or markets.”

The Points North Institute also announced the new slate of 30 documentary filmmakers selected for this year’s artist programs.
